   The Founder

Started in the year 1912 Rajpal & Sons has been publishing books for the last ninety-seven years.

Founded by journalist turned publisher, Rajpal made his first foray into the world of publishing in 1912 at Lahore. At that time Urdu was the official language in Punjab and most books were published in Urdu. A man with a progressive outlook, Rajpal chose to publish in Hindi as well as Urdu. Starting with religious books, he added a range of biographies and works of creative writings and several books on contemporary social issues written by well known authors such as Bhai Parmanand, Santram, Satyapal and Kaviraj Jaigopal. Not content with Urdu and Hindi, he also published books in English and “The Wisdom of the Vedas” published by him was particularly noteworthy and recommended by the Oxford University in its course on Indian philosophy.

Excellence in all aspects of book production was his motto. To that end, some special books would be printed at the Indian Press, Allahabad, considered the best printing press at the time, and the entire edition then shipped from Allahabad to Lahore. Book covers were designed by the famous artist T K Mitra of Calcutta.

An ardent champion of the freedom of expression, Rajpal fought and won a case in the Punjab High Court, in defence of an author’s right to express his opinion. A bitterly fought case it drew a great deal of attention and polarized public opinion but Rajpal was acquitted. However, disgruntled elements, unhappy with the Court verdict, made attempts on his life. And in the third  attempt on April 6, 1929 Rajpal was stabbed to death while sitting in his shop-cum-office in Lahore.

In the year 199 ?? in recognition of Rajpal’s contribution to the cause of freedom of expression, the Geneva based International Publishing Association posthumously bestowed on him a Special Award for Freedom of Expression, which was given away by Sh L K Advani, the then Deputy Prime Minister of India .

In the short span of seventeen years, Rajpal established new benchmarks in Indian publishing and laid the foundations of a wholesome vibrant publishing tradition -  a tradition we
proudly carry forward.
